Have you considered about cosmetic surgery? Are you considering undergoing a cosmetic surgery procedure in the near future?
You are not alone if you answered yes to either question. As a matter of fact, an upward trend in the number of plastic surgery procedures carried out in the past year may be another example of economic improvement in the United States.
The latest numbers from the American Society of Plastic Surgeons show 13.1 million cosmetic surgeries and minimally-invasive procedures were conducted in 2010. That is a 5% increase over the previous year.
The top surgical procedure continues to be breast augmentation , which saw a 2 percent increase in 2010. Facelift procedures, which had not seen an increase since 2007, were also up in 2010 – up 9 percent. Body shaping surgeries, including body lifts and breast lifts, thigh lifts and upper arm lifts, saw increases too. Breast lifts were up 3 percent (90,000 procedures, up 3 percent), lower body lifts. Many of those procedures are asked for after experiencing extreme weight loss.
It is undoubtedly good news for those of us in the plastic surgery profession, but I think it reflects good news on a broader scale too because it appears to point to a sign of rising confidence among consumers and to an economy that is slowly getting back on tract.
Here is a look at some of the other statistics from the ASPS:
Cosmetic surgical procedures increase overall by 2 percent, with nearly 1.6 million surgeries completed last year.
The top five cosmetic surgery procedures were:
- Breast augmentation – 296,000
- Nose reshaping – 252,000
- Eyelid surgery - 209,000
- Liposuction – 203,000
- Tummy tuck – 116,000
Minimally-invasive cosmetic procedures also saw a 5 percent increase, with nearly 11.6 million procedures in 2010.
The top five minimally-invasive procedures last year were:
- Botox (Botulinum toxin type A) – 5.4 million
- Soft tissue dermal fillers – 1.8 million
- Chemical peel – 1.1 million
- Laser hair removal – 938,000
- Microdermabrasion – 825,000
